    ABOUT THIS ROAD TYPE

Gravel roads use various sizes of crushed rock — granite, limestone, river rock, or recycled concrete — to create an all-weather driving surface. They're a reliable option for ranch roads, especially in areas with clay soils or poor natural drainage where caliche alone would turn to mud. Gravel provides better drainage than most materials because water flows through the spaces between the rocks rather than pooling on the surface. The key to a good gravel road is proper base preparation and using the right size and type of rock for your soil conditions. A well-built gravel road on good base can handle almost anything Texas weather throws at it.

    ADVANTAGES

    • Excellent all-weather performance — even in heavy rain
    • Superior drainage through the rock layer
    • Wide variety of rock types available for different needs
    • Long-lasting with proper base preparation
    • Works well on clay soils that reject caliche
    • Can be built with recycled materials for cost savings

    CONSIDERATIONS

    • Loose gravel on top can shift under tires and trailer wheels
    • Not as smooth as a compacted caliche or limestone surface
    • Can require containment edges on slopes and curves
    • Larger rock sizes are uncomfortable at higher speeds
    • Rock can migrate off the road surface over time

    HOW WE BUILD IT

    1. 1Clear road corridor of vegetation and topsoil
    2. 2Grade subgrade and address soft spots or clay areas
    3. 3Install geotextile fabric to separate rock from soft soil
    4. 4Place and compact base rock layer (4–6 inches)
    5. 5Add surface gravel layer and grade to shape
    6. 6Install drainage features at low points and crossings

    MATERIALS USED

Crushed granite, limestone, or river rock
    Recycled concrete (optional base material)
Geotextile fabric for clay soil separation
    Culverts and drainage pipe

    ONGOING MAINTENANCE

    • Rake or grade loose surface material back into place
    • Add fresh gravel to thin spots and high-traffic areas
    • Maintain drainage ditches and culverts
    • Repair washouts on slopes after heavy storms
    • Consider dust control treatment in dry months

    BEST FOR

    • Properties with clay soil or poor drainage
    • Ranch roads that must be passable in all weather
    • Roads with steep grades that need maximum drainage
    • Budget-friendly all-weather alternative to limestone
    • Temporary or semi-permanent access roads

    ESTIMATED COST

    $4,000 – $8,500

per 1/4 mile (12 ft wide)

Cost varies by rock type, source distance, road width, and depth of material. Recycled concrete base can reduce cost. Adding edge containment or geotextile fabric adds to the total.
