    ABOUT THIS ROAD TYPE

Crushed limestone is a step up from raw caliche — it's quarried, processed, and screened to uniform sizes, which means it compacts tighter and creates a harder, more durable surface. It's the preferred choice for ranch entrances, high-traffic roads, and anywhere you need a road that handles heavy loads consistently. The material comes in various gradations from fine 'fines' to larger base rock, and the best roads use a combination: larger base rock on the bottom for structure, topped with fines that lock together and create a smooth driving surface. It costs more than raw caliche, but the durability and reduced maintenance make it worth the investment for roads that get regular use.

    ADVANTAGES

    • Harder and more durable than raw caliche
    • Uniform material compacts tighter with less settling
    • Handles heavy truck and trailer traffic well
    • Cleaner, more professional appearance
    • Less maintenance frequency than caliche
    • Available in multiple gradations for optimal layering

    CONSIDERATIONS

    • More expensive than raw caliche
    • Material must be hauled from a quarry — distance affects cost
    • Still requires periodic grading maintenance
    • Needs a solid base layer for best long-term performance
    • Can be slippery briefly after fresh application before it locks in
