## ABOUT THIS ROAD TYPE

Caliche is a naturally occurring limestone and calcium carbonate blend found throughout the Texas Hill Country. It's the most popular ranch road material in the region because it's locally sourced, affordable, and compacts into a hard, stable surface that handles ranch traffic well. When properly graded with a crown for drainage, a caliche road will last years before needing maintenance. It's the go-to choice for ranch access roads, interior property roads, and any road that needs to be functional without breaking the budget. Most Hill Country ranchers have caliche roads — there's a reason it's been the standard for generations.

## ADVANTAGES

- Locally sourced and widely available across the Hill Country
- Compacts into a hard, stable driving surface
- Natural drainage — sheds water when properly crowned
- Easy and affordable to grade and maintain
- Blends naturally with Hill Country terrain
- Can be layered and improved over time

## CONSIDERATIONS

- Gets dusty in dry summer conditions
- Needs periodic re-grading after heavy rainstorms
- Softer than processed crushed rock when saturated
- Quality varies depending on the source pit
- Can develop washboard texture under heavy traffic

## HOW WE BUILD IT

1. 1 Clear and grub the road corridor of all vegetation and obstacles
2. 2 Grade the subgrade to establish proper road shape and crown
3. 3 Install culverts and drainage structures at low-water crossings
4. 4 Haul and spread caliche material in 6–8 inch lifts
5. 5 Water and compact each lift with a roller or loaded equipment
6. 6 Final grade to establish drainage crown and smooth surface

## MATERIALS USED

Raw caliche from local pits

Geotextile fabric (optional, for soft spots)

Culvert pipe for drainage crossings

Water for compaction during construction

## ONGOING MAINTENANCE

- Grade with a motor grader or box blade 1–2 times per year
- Fill potholes and washouts after heavy rain
- Maintain crown shape so water sheds to sides
- Add fresh caliche to worn areas every few years
- Keep drainage ditches and culverts clear

## BEST FOR

- General ranch access roads
- Interior property roads connecting pastures
- Budget-friendly new road construction
- Properties where a natural look matters
- Low to moderate traffic volume

## ESTIMATED COST

$3,500 – $7,000

per 1/4 mile (12 ft wide)

Cost depends on material source distance, road width, terrain difficulty, and whether the road is new construction or an overlay on existing surface. Culverts and drainage crossings add cost.

\* Prices are approximate and vary by terrain, access, material source distance, and project specifics. Contact us for a free estimate.
